MSNBC guest, GOP strategist seem to agree: ‘Limbaugh is irrelevant’

By David Edwards and Stephen Webster Ever see a Republican strategist squirm? You’re about to.

Alex Conant, consultant to and former spokesman for the Republican National Committee, could not seem to run enough misdirection to save his life.

Appearing with radio show host Bill Press and MSNBC’s Tamron Hall, Conant was asked his opinion of GOP radio pundit Rush Limbaugh’s recent comparison of President Obama to al-Qaeda terrorists.

Conant smirked and tried to turn the discussion onto why MSNBC would even bother covering the remarks.

“This has nothing to do with this network,” said Hall. “You tell me now if it is right to compare the president of the United States to al-Qaeda.”

Replied Conant, “Rush Limbaugh has not been elected to anything. He doesn’t have the power to tax people. He doesn’t have the power to send people to war. I don’t understand how his comments are so relevant that you guys are going to spend all afternoon covering them.”

Said Press, “Some of the Republicans have had the balls to say it; most of them won’t. Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer, okay? He just says anything he can to get more ratings and more publicity…”

“When elected Republicans start saying that,” responded Conant, “then I’m more than happy to come on and debate…”

Cornered again by Hall to dismiss Limbaugh, Conant said, “I just don’t understand how his comments are so relevant,” which made Press and Hall laugh.

Responded Press, “This points out the total void of leadership, the vacuum of leadership in the Republican party. They don’t have anybody who can speak for them.”
