God Wants Americans To Shoot Guns, California Lawmaker Claims

By Annie-Rose Strasser/Think Progress
Guns were not around in the days of the bible, but that isn’t stopping one California assemblyman from making the assertion that firearms are “essential to living the way God intended.”
Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R) floated the theory that God wants Americans to own weapons — and added his heated criticism of President Obama’s gun violence prevention proposals — during an appearance on a Christian talk show. Raw Story caught the clip:
“Guns are used an average of 3 million times a year according to the Clinton Justice Department,” Assemblyman Tim Donnelly told the Christian talk radio show The Bottom Line on Wednesday. “That’s like 6,900 times a day. That’s the high end of the statistics, other people say it’s only 200 times a day.”
“Whatever that number is, they are used to defend human life,” he explained.“They are used to defend our property and our families and our faith and our freedom, and they are absolutely essential to living the way God intended for us to live.”[..]
“All [Obama's] plan will do is make it more costly and more difficult for law-abiding citizens to exercise their Constitutional right,” the assemblyman said. “We must hold criminals, not inanimate steel objects, accountable for their actions.
Donnelly’s logic might be disputed by other religious Christians, who would rather point to biblical quotes against guns — Isaiah 2:4, for example, which says “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” — as an argument that life should focus on family, not firearms.
