Fred Phelps, the founder of Westboro Baptist Church — infamous for its “God Hates Fags” campaign — passed away last night.
His son, Timothy Phelps, confirmed his father’s passing to WIBW.
Phelps came to national prominence in the early 1990s when he and his followers began picketing outside of churches that failed to adhere to his strict “moral” standards, either by supporting pro-choice positions or LGBT rights.
His organization later started to conduct anti-LGBT protests at the funerals of American servicemen and women, who were dying because the United States was becoming more accepting of LGBT lifestyles.
“Our attitude toward what’s happening with the war is the Lord is punishing this evil nation for abandoning all moral imperatives that are worth a dime,” Phelps said.
Phelps was excommunicated from the church last August for reasons that have not been made public.
