Fox News host Eric Bolling: Single female breadwinners ‘pushing towards more abortions’

Commenting on the rise of “breadwinner moms,” Fox News host Eric Bolling speculated the socioeconomic development would result in more abortions.

“If you read into that study… the reason is exactly what we’ve been talking about right here, the breakdown of the American family,” he said on Fox’s The Five. “The American family is breaking down. Women are forced to go out and be the breadwinners for families and that is why the number is skewed higher now — single moms.”

“Here is another offshoot of that,” Bolling continued. “If you’re a single mom, breadwinner of the family, and you get pregnant aren’t we pushing towards more abortions? It seems like we are.”

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, thePew study found the United States was home to about 13.7 million mothers who were the primary source of income for their households. Roughly, 63 percent of those “breadwinner moms” were single mothers.

Fox News History: Bolling Claims Saddam Hussein "Financed" 9/11 Attacks

The Five co-host Eric Bolling apparently thinks that the United States invaded Iraq because Saddam Hussein "financed" the 9/11 terror attacks. This is blatantly false. The link between Hussein and September 11 has been long-since debunked by numerous investigative bodies, including the 9/11 Commission, which discovered "no credible evidence" that Iraq was involved in the attacks. 

In a January 11 post on Twitter, Bolling linked to a Huffington Post article highlighting comments he made on The Five on January 9, in which he accused children's book publisher Scholastic of "pushing a liberal agenda." According to Bolling, liberal bias can be found in children's history textbooks that include "very liberally biased" arguments such as: "George Bush went in [Iraq] because he heard there were weapons of mass destruction and they were never found."

Responding to the Huffington Post, Bolling wrote: "We (America) 'went into' Iraq because radical Islamists killed 3k of ours+Saddam financed."

In the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration repeatedly suggested (in the absence of credible evidence) close links between Iraq and al Qaeda. A poll taken less than six months after the invasion found that nearly 70% of Americans wrongly believed that Hussein was personally involved in the September 11 attacks.

Bolling's assertion that Hussein "financed" 9/11 has been thoroughly debunked. As reported by The Washington Post in 2004, the 9/11 Commission explained that there was '"no credible evidence' that Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq collaborated with the al Qaeda terrorist network on any attacks on the United States.'" 

Further, in 2007, the US Defense Department released a report concluding that "Saddam Hussein's government did not cooperate with al Qaeda prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq." 

But if Bolling wants to dismiss the Pentagon and the 9/11 Commission as "liberally biased," then perhaps he would listen to Dick Cheney, who also conceded in a 2009 speech that, "I do not believe and have never seen any evidence to confirm that [Hussein] was involved in 9/11. We had that reporting for a while, [but] eventually it turned out not to be true."

Eric Bolling's "Crack Pipe" Comment About Rep. Waters Just The Latest Example Of His Racially Charged Rhetoric

On the February 16 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, Eric Bolling responded to Rep. Maxine Waters' (D-CA) recent comment that House Republican leaders are "demons" by saying in part that Waters should "step away from the crack pipe":

BOLLING: What is going on in California? How's this? Congresswoman, you saw what happened to Whitney Houston. Step away from the crack pipe. Step away from the Xanax. Step away from the Lorazepam. Because it's going to get you in trouble. How else do you explain those kinds of comments?

Bolling's comment drew some shock from co-hosts Steve Doocy and Juliet Huddy, and after a commercial break, Bolling said that he was "kidding about the crack pipe, but obviously the rhetoric, you know."

This is not the first time Bolling has used racially charged rhetoric on Fox. Last June, on his Fox Business show, Bolling teased a segment about the White House hosting the president of Gabon bysaying, "Guess who's coming to dinner? A dictator. Mr. Obama shares a laugh with one of Africa's kleptocrats. It's not the first time he's had a hoodlum in the hizzouse." He began the segment itself by saying, in part, "So what's with all the hoods in the hizzy?" He later issued a brief -- and dishonest -- apology for the segment.

In May 2011, Bolling claimed Obama was "chugging a few 40s" instead of responding to devastating tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri. Bolling later tried to walk back his "chugging 40s" comment by pretending that he hadn't engaged in racially charged rhetoric and asserting that he "took some heat for saying Obama should have delayed his European bar crawl."

And then when we go into the election Obama is going to go, "Oh, look what I did all you Israeli vote -- Israel, Jewish voters. Vote for me. I am pro-Israel." Bolling Has A Long History Of Promoting Conspiracy Theories

Bolling: "There Is A Legitimate Question As To Whether Or Not The President...Is Allowed To Be President." After President Obama released his long-form birth certificate in April, Bolling claimed during the April 27 edition of his Fox Business program "that there is a legitimate question as to whether or not the president of the United States is allowed to be president of the United States" and that Obama's long-form birth certificate had "been altered." BOLLING: We haven't touched this birth certificate issue since it began. We haven't touched it, but there is a legitimate question as to whether or not the president of the United States is allowed to be president of the United States. It is written in the Constitution. You have to be a natural born citizen of America. I mean, it's an issue.

JUAN WILLIAMS: No, it isn't an issue, Eric. This issue has been settled since he was running for president even when he's in the Senate and produced the short form for people. Just never been an issue.

It's been something that has been elevated to some kind of -- they've used this as a surrogate I think to belittle the president. People who don't like his policies who think that they never voted for him, how can this guy be president. It is racially tinged. It is a damaging subject.

BOLLING: I just have tell you for purposefully, we didn't touch it because we didn't think it was an issue until I saw this document. When I saw the green border, the Photoshop border around the birth certificate, I said wait a minute.

This thing isn't a pure copy from a book, a ledger from Hawaii. This thing has been altered. Someone's playing with it. Once that came out, I said we have to at least ask the question Juan. That's all. We're not claiming it is ill legit whatever, but someone is playing around with this document. Bolling Hosted Birther Pamela Geller To Raise "Questions" About Obama's Long-Form Birth Certificate. During the April 27 edition of his Fox Business program, Bolling analyzed a blown-up version of  Obama's long-form birth certificate  with conservative blogger Pamela Geller. Bolling claimed part of the certificate "had to be Photoshopped in" and concluded there were "questions" surrounding the birth certificate's authenticity. From Follow the Money:

BOLLING: I need to know this. You see this fold. This has clearly been photocopied from a book. You see that. It kind of folds back almost like a binding of a book and for some reason, there's a green border around it that had to be Photoshoped in.

GELLER: Well this whole boarder is suspect. I mean, if you're taking a scan of something, to your point, it would be white. Why is this the color of the same -

BOLLING: Note this. Note this you guys April 25, 2011 two days ago is when this was - when this was requested from the state registrar, Alvin Onacus. So we'll keep our eye on it. We'll keep digging. Hey, listen it may or may not be, but certainly opens up the can of worms that there are at least questions for it.

OBAMA'S RURAL COUNCIL

Bolling Adopted Beck's "One World Order" U.N. Conspiracy. During the June 25 edition of his Fox Business show, Bolling attacked Obama's Rural Council as evidence of the implementation of a United Nations plan and the coming "one world order." Bolling claimed that "[t]he aims of the White House Rural Development Plan sound eerily similar to a U.N. plan called Agenda 21 where a central planning agency would be responsible for oversight into all areas of our lives. Bolling: "I'm Going To Get Called Out As A Conspiracy Theorist On This," But "There's Something Going On" Between The Tea Party And Moody's. During the July 31 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends Sunday, Bolling said:

BOLLING: I'm going to get called out for being a conspiracy theorist on this, but Moody's is the group who sat down before Boehner's plan was signed and before any of this thing, this stuff went on to - with the GOP freshmen who are heavily tea party. So now Moody's says, ' we're going to sit down with you, we're going to talk about this debt problem.' Why would they do that, Steve? Why wouldn't they just sit down with the house complete? Leadership -

STEVE DOOCY (co-host): Politics. Politics and money.

BOLLING: Of course. Moody's was leaning on the tea party to roll - there's something going on here. Behind the scenes. I don't know if, Moody's is you know, talking to the White House or talking to Biden saying, you know 'we'll do this,' for some -- whatever reason, but clearly Moody's - I would - let me put it this way: they're not going to downgrade US debt. PETROBRAS-SOROS CONSPIRACY

Bolling: "Did [Soros] Know? Does He Know" About $2 Billion Petrobras Deal? During a guest appearance on Fox News' Fox & Friends, Bolling revived the false conspiracy theory that Obama arranged for an Export-Import Bank loan to a Brazilian oil company in order to enrich George Soros at the expense of the United States. From the broadcast:

BOLLING: Okay. Let's do this. We're going to get blasted for this, but George Soros owned, at one point owned, 22 million shares of Petrobras, the company that has available to it those $2 billion in drilling loans. They haven't tapped it. It's available through the Import-Export Bank, which is in the U.S. It allows them to tap $2 billion.

Now, the question is, did he know? Does he know? Who knows? But I will tell you one thing, it's been a great trade for him. It's been very profitable and as everyone knows, George Soros is one of the big contributors to MoveOn.org, big contributor to the Obama--

KILMEADE: And did he know the president was going to say this $2 billion deal? That's what you're saying.

GULF OIL SPILL

Bolling Wondered If Obama "Let" Oil Rig Leak So He "Could Renege On His Promise" To "Allow Offshore Drilling." During the May 27, 2010, edition of Fox Business' Happy Hour, Bolling said:

BOLLING: Let me ask you this, alright, Alan, day one. That leak came and BP said there's about 42,000 gallons -- 1,000 gallons, barrels a day were leaking. About day nine, they said, you know, it looks like it's going to be 5,000 barrels per day, 210,000 gallons. Today, day 38, we find it's likely a million gallons a day.

Had the Obama administration gone in there, sent the Army Corps of Engineers into that hole, into that -- the, the, the dig, and find out that there's a million gallons a day, and BP had no way of stopping this, they may have started then, not day 38.

ALAN COLMES (Fox News contributor): But, you know, they went on the best information they had, day 4, day 5, day 9.

BOLLING: Are you sure they didn't let it --

CODY WILLARD (co-host): But they could have gotten better information.

Fox News has certainly racked up its fair share ofembarrassing mistakes. (Egypt, FYI, is not next to Iran.) But given how often the network brings up the 9/11 attacks, the already gaffe-prone Fox News host Eric Bolling whipped up a doozy. Last night on Fox’s new show The Five, the new hosts rehashed President George W. Bush’s justification for the Iraq War. When co-host Bob Beckel asked why the weapons of mass destruction Bush claimed Iraq possessed were never found, Mediaite caught Bolling’s novel response: “Whether they did or didn’t, America was certainly safe between 2000 and 2008. I don’t remember any terrorist attacks on American soil during that period of time.” Watch it:

Fox's Eric Bolling Cheers His Outranking Of Deceased Anchor

Fox News has an Eric Bolling problem. As Media Matters has documented, the Fox host has cast doubt on the legitimacy of President Obama's long-form birth certificate; has repeatedly made racially charged remarks to attack Obama; and routinely bungles facts in both Fox's so-called "opinion" and"news" hours.

Today, Bolling is drawing fire again for crass comments he made in regard to recently deceased anchor Mark Haines. As TVNewser noted, Bolling tweeted last night:

TVNewser's Chris Ariens accurately responded to Bolling's insensitive remarks by writing: "Really? To claim you've outranked a man who died a month ago ... on a list Mark Haines probably never knew existed? That's some serious class. Wonder what Roger Ailes -- who was among those paying respects after Haines' sudden death last month -- thinks about this."

Bolling also posted the same comments on his Facebook page and added in his comments section, "now if I could just get past the retired hosts! : )" After a Facebook fan remarked that Beck is leaving his Fox News program, Bolling wrote: "Tell me about it... the man is a visionary. I'll miss him a lot."

That Bolling is describing Beck as a "visionary" isn't surprising, given that Bolling has copied some ofBeck's shtick and has served as one of Beck's guest hosts. Bolling has been mentioned by several media outlets as a potential replacement for Beck's 5pm ET slot.  

Bolling previously worked at CNBC with Haines. In an interview with Media Matters, former CNBC anchor Ted David questioned whether Bolling had the experience to be a cable host, adding, "I never thought he was especially bright or especially skilled or astute."

Fox Exec Admits "A Line Was Crossed," But Considers Bolling Matter "Closed"

Last Friday, Fox's Eric Bolling teased a segment about the White House hosting the president of Gabon, Ali Bongo, by saying, "Guess who's coming to dinner? A dictator. Mr. Obama shares a laugh with one of Africa's kleptocrats. It's not first time he's had a hoodlum in the hizzouse." The tease was accompanied by a graphic of Obama and Bongo with the words "Hoods in the House."

On Tuesday, following a barrage of criticism and three days of repeatedly defending his remarks on Twitter, Bolling apologized, saying, "We got a little fast and loose with the language." As we'vepointed out, Bolling's apology was not only brief but dishonest, because many of Bolling's remarks were not part of an off-the-cuff discussion, but apparently scripted and accompanied by equally inflammatory images. As Columbia Journalism Review noted:

This was no off-the-cuff rant. Bringing last Friday's show to air was a team effort. The segment was conceived and scripted, segment teasers were written, chyrons were created, footage was pulled, a photo of Gabon's president was located and a flashy tooth was digitally affixed. In other words, people (journalists, maybe even?) besides Bolling worked to make this segment happen last Friday. 

Yet Bolling brushed it off as getting "fast and loose with the language." And, according to Fox Business executive VP Kevin Magee, that's sufficient:

The New York Daily News on Tuesday quoted Kevin Magee, executive vice president of Fox Business Network, saying: "I spoke with Eric and his producer yesterday and we all agree the line was crossed, thus last night's apology. We now consider the matter closed." 

So Fox "consider[s] the matter closed." One brief, dishonest apology from Bolling -- and, notably, no apology at all from Fox -- is supposed to be sufficient for this gratuitous, divisive, and disgusting rhetoric.

Last month, MSNBC host Ed Schultz was rightly suspended from the network for a week after calling conservative radio host Laura Ingraham a "right-wing slut" -- even after he'd apologized. A real news network would hold its employees accountable for offensive commentary, but on Fox, offensive rhetoricoften gets swept under the rug.

Were Fox a real news outfit, Bolling would be facing at least a suspension. But it is not. In fact, as we have seen over and over again, racially charged and extremist rhetoric has been welcome on Fox, and Magee's statement suggests they have no intention of stopping that now.

BOLLING: I took some heat for saying Obama should have delayed his European bar crawl or whatever he's doing over there, head to Missouri, check out the devastation, let the people in Missouri know that he's there for them, or, at least, if you're still going to go through with that European trip, maybe swing by Israel on the way back and say, "Hey, tip of the hat, guys, I've got your back." Bolling On Obama's Budget Proposal: "Maybe" It Makes Sense "In Kenya, But Certainly Not Here." Discussing Obama's budget proposal, Bolling stated: "How does increasing taxes count as spending cuts in your world, Mr. Obama? Maybe in Kenya, but certainly not here. This plan will amount to deficit increases, not reductions. It's a load of crap, and I'm offended that you think we're dumb enough to accept your math or your plan." From the April 13, 2011, edition of  Follow the Money:

BOLLING: After about 25 minutes of trashing the GOP plan to tackle $6 trillion in deficit, Obama finally got to his gimmick -- I mean, his plan. His plan is a 12-year, four-part scenario that breaks down like this. Number one, use the $38.5 billion in savings from last week's budget deal, but the president's math is a bit more than fuzzy: 38.5 times 12 is not $750 billion like he proposes, it's $462 billion. Bolling: Border Around Long-Form Birth Certificate "Had To Be Photoshopped In." Following the release of Obama's long-form birth certificate, Bolling claimed that the birth certificate's "green border" "had to be Photoshopped in." Bolling also suggested Obama's birth certificate wasn't authentic because the doctor "who signed it" didn't tell his family he had helped deliver baby Obama. From Follow the Money:

She didn't know about it. His son said I had no idea. It came as a complete shock to him as well. If you gave birth to the president of the United States, don't you think your family would know about it?
