Biden mocks Romney by taking credit for moon landing

Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday joked that he would “take a lot of credit for a man having landed on the moon” to point out the absurdity of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney taking responsibility for saving the U.S. auto industry.

“So I’ll take a lot of credit for the fact that this industry’s come back,” he told Cleveland’s WEWS-TV earlier this month even though he had penned a 2008 op-ed titled “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,” warning that if a bailout was provided to the auto industry then “its demise will be virtually guaranteed.”

“Whoa!” Biden exclaimed to crowd at car dealership in Martins Ferry, Ohio on Thursday. “And by the way, I’ll take a lot credit of for a man having landed on the moon. Because although I was in school, I rooted for it.”

According to Arthur J. Gonzalez, a former federal judge in U.S. bankruptcy court, G.M. and Chrysler only survived because they went into a managed bankruptcy strengthened by the government bailouts that were approved by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

“One thing is clear, without government support in one fashion or another, there were no sources of funding,” Gonzalez told ABC News earlier this year.

Speaking to an audience at New York University last month, Biden suggested the following slogan for his re-election campaign: “Thanks to President Obama, bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive.”

“You have to ask yourself had Governor Romney been president, could he have used the same slogan in reverse?”

BIDEN BASHES ROMNEY IN DES MOINES REGISTER OP-ED

Vice President Biden attacked GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney in an op-ed in the Des Moines Register today, less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses. The Obama re-election campaign has focused on Romney as the most likely GOP nominee, but Biden is the highest-profile member of the president’s team to directly attack the former Massachusetts governor. “How can anyone forget the economic catastrophe brought about by the same policies Mr. Romney’s proposing? His are the same policies that deregulated Wall Street and turned it into a casino that gambled recklessly with hardworking Americans’ money,” Biden wrote. The vice president did not mention any other presidential candidates in the op-ed, even though former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (GA) recently had been seen as a frontrunner.

GOP audience booing gay soldier was ‘reprehensible’

When asked about the booing of a gay soldier at a recent Republican presidential debate, Vice President Joe Biden was nearly speechless Tuesday, something that does not happen very often.

“What did you think of the booing that went on the other day about the gay soldier?” The View‘s Joy Behar asked the vice president. “Did you have a visceral response to it?”

“I did have a visceral response,” Biden replied. “I’m not sure if it’s because my son spent a year in Iraq. I know my sons and the kids with his — kids, they’re grown men — I don’t think they give a damn whether a guy firing a rifle to protect them is gay or straight. I don’t think they care about that. And, look, this kid risked his life. This kid is there for a year. I, quite frankly, I thought it was reprehensible.”

“And no one spoke up,” Behar noted. “That entire panel, not one person said anything.”

Biden only looked down in silence but offered no response.

Biden fires back at Boehner

Mark Murray At an event promoting the economic stimulus this morning, Vice President Biden fired back at House Minority Leader John Boehner's speech today.

Mr. Boehner, after months of promising a look at his party's agenda for his plans for America -- their economic agenda -- he made what was billed this morning as a major economic address. And his chief proposal, when you look at it, was apparently that the president should fire his economic team. Very constructive advice, and we thank the leader for that. (Laughter.)

But let's take a look at the rest of his advice... Let's review a little bit of history here. For eight years before we arrived in the West Wing, Mr. Boehner and his party ran the economy, and the middle class literally into the ground. They took a $237 billion operating surplus, inherited from the Clinton administration, and left us with a $1.3 trillion deficit -- and in the process quadrupled the national debt, all before we literally turned on the lights in the West Wing, before we did one single solitary thing. They gave free rein to the special interests to write their own rules at the expense of everybody else, not just the middle class. And the sum total was the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression -- a crisis that wreaked havoc upon American families and businesses all across this country, a crisis from which we are still digging out.
